ABOUT THE EVENT
Experience the thought-provoking and immersive journey of Can you sing the National Anthem?: A Forum Play by Malongdu Theatre as a part of Bangkok Theatre Festival 2023. This captivating production offers a unique and participatory theatrical experience, shedding light on the lives and struggles of Burmese laborers in Thailand.
The play introduces you to a diverse cast of international actors, portraying the real-life experiences of Burmese laborers who have left their homeland in search of better opportunities, only to face the harsh realities of being second-class citizens in a neighboring country. These laborers are shaped by a complex history that once labeled them as 'Bloodshed Warriors,' archenemies of the Siamese people. However, as history has evolved, they've transformed into laborers in Thailand, fleeing the horrors of a civil war that Thailand is perceived as sympathetic towards the Burmese government.
Despite being an integral part of the Thai society, these laborers remain silent citizens, toiling for meager wages while enduring the exploitation of the Thai state, Thai capitalists, and the amusement of ordinary Thai citizens when they attempt to speak the Thai language with their distinctive accents. 'Can you sing the National Anthem?' delves deep into their untold stories, highlighting their remarkable resilience and the difficult challenges they confront daily.
This show will be performed in Burmese with Thai and English surtitles.
