ABOUT THE EVENT
"Never did so many die so quickly, so horrifically... so pointlessly..." CONTINUA ENSEMBLE presents its second carefully curated concert performance of a projected extended series, based on the incredible legacy of war poetry, music, and painting created by the brave soldiers - on both sides of the conflict - involved in the terrible conflict of the so-called “Great War”. For anyone with even the most cursory knowledge of world history, the mere mention of the River Somme in France instantly brings to mind what must rank as amongst the most notorious, mindless, harrowing – not to mention futile - occurrences in all of human warfare. The sheer hell-on-earth that was “The Battle of the Somme” lasted from 1st July to 18th November 1916, unrelentingly an unspeakably cruel experience for unimaginably large numbers of ill-prepared young soldiers.
